Angela Amendola is extremely multi-faceted: she's one of our Flower Club founding members, a marketing consultant, entrepreneur, and works for BeautyCounter (best rep. ever!). So when I asked her to write a post on clean beauty to shed light on the ever-changing industry and the importance of safe beauty products, she agreed right away! (And I'm so glad she did). I've been a fan of BeautyCounter and safe beauty products for some time now and I've seen my skin make a change for the better. So I've also shared a few of my favorite BeautyCounter products below after the article. Enjoy! xx, Melanie
Clean. Nontoxic. Vegan. Cruelty-free. Safe. Natural. Organic. If you're into beauty at all, you're probably seeing these clean beauty buzz words everywhere. But clean beauty is so much more than a buzz word. There is a serious lack of regulation in the beauty industry, and lucky for all of us, consumers are finally catching on and taking notice.
Quick history lesson (bear with me!): there hasn't been any laws passed regulating the beauty industry since 1938. Since then, over 80,000 chemicals have been introduced into commerce. Over 80% of those? Never tested for safety. Even worse? Currently in the US, we have legally banned or restricted the use of only 30 ingredients from personal care products. That is WAY behind many other countries - for example, the European Union has banned over 1400 ingredients.
What does this all mean, you ask? It means that brands in the US are basically self-regulated and it's perfectly legal to load up our products with tons of harmful stuff. And why would they do that, you ask? Well, a lot of those harmful ingredients happen to make our products perform well and allows beauty brands to produce them for cheaper.
But, don't freak out - there are safer, cleaner alternatives that also work! These are some of my tried and tested favorite brands in the clean beauty space - because who has time to read labels?!
Full disclosure, I work with Beautycounter - but they really are the leader in the clean beauty space (you can read a non-biased opinion why here!). They are all about transparency and actively advocating and lobbying for better beauty laws. I decided to join Beautycounter as a consultant over three years ago, simply wanting a discount on my products, but it's completely changed my outlook on clean living in general - beyond just beauty.
Some of my BC faves:
Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer with SPF - also a fave of celebs like Naomi Watts and Gwyneth Paltrow, this tinted moisturizer is life.
Resurfacing Overnight Peel - go to sleep, wake up glowing. No brainer!
Countertime Collection - Retinatural, a new safer version of beauty powerhouse Retinol, makes this line a must have.
Want to do your part to change these outdated laws? Text “BetterBeauty” to 52886 to urge congress to pass more health protective laws. At the end of the day, be your own advocate and use resources like EWG.org which rates over 70,000 products for safety. Because beauty should be good for you!
