cristie's favorite christmas things

yes, i live for the holidays! no lie! i have an ongoing list on my iphone called "holidays," so whenever i get an incredible holiday idea in the month of june or in no man’s holiday time, i can take note! as soon as september ends (my most hated months in the calendar year are august and september. this is a known fact to those close to me) and the day turns into my beloved october 1, it's time to start playing christmas music and watching my cheesy hallmark movies all night long. i mean, i love halloween and always kill it with my costume and my birthday and thanksgiving are typically either the same day or weekend, so yes, i am all about those holidays too, but there is nothing to me like christmas! maybe it's because my love language is gifting and seeing people gift thoughtful gifts and just all the nostalgia that comes with the season really speaks to me! so instead of my typical currently blog post, i am going to spread my christmas knowledge and spirit with all my favorite holiday things. here we go!

favorite holiday traditions
  • my friends' secret santa exchange, which we take very seriously with a theme and a nice lunch or dinner. i had it at my house about two years ago, and it was pajama-themed. we made slippers and had a cozy lasagna dinner.
  • my parents still put "from santa" on all my gifts, and i get a stocking (no matter my age. this is never allowed to change! sorry, i am not sorry.)
  • wrapping all my gifts while watching love actually typically the day before christmas eve
  • christmas cards - there is no one who loves receiving christmas cards more than me! even though i have no children, you better believe i still send these out. here is mine from last year. please send me your christmas cards, people!
favorite holiday movies
  • melanie and i are both obsessed with the pure joy that is a christmas movie. bad acting, no budgets, terrible and convoluted storylines speak to me. i think i average one christmas movie every two days. here are a few of my favorites right now:
    • the princess switch - netflix big-budget christmas movie of the season with vanessa hudgens. fake countries and accents, people who mysteriously look identical to each other, running in the snow in a strapless dress to a gazebo and of course a scene involving horses. this is pure christmas movie magic.
    • merry kissmass - how can i describe this masterpiece? let’s just say the ending scene says it all. nothing about this movie makes sense in the best possible way. also, i am starting a campaign over where does barkley go post-adoption day?! he gets adopted, and then they spend the rest of the day without him!!!!!!
    • the spirit of christmas - falling in love with a ghost that lives in an old hotel. yes, this is the premise. just go with it.

if you share the passion for holiday movies - i cannot recommend this podcast enough: the most wonderful pod of the year. jackie durruthy is one of my best friends, and i can personally vouch for her being one of the funniest humans on planet earth. i listen to this podcast the moment it comes out, that’s how much i look forward to it.
here is the description on their itunes page:
do you find yourself watching christmas movies (any and all of them year-round)? do you hum 'jingle bells' while you pee? do you text back 'ho ho ho' instead of 'ha ha ha'? well, you're in good company! so do comedians jackie gonzalez-durruthy and ross kimball. join these human-sized elves as they navigate the wintery wonderland of lesser-known christmas movies. jump on santa's sleigh and join them as they talk with their special guests about the movies guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit. so put out the milk & cookies, put on your flannel pajamas, and celebrate the most wonderful time of year with your new favorite christmas podcast! it truly is the most wonderful pod of the year!
i have so much to add to this list, but melanie is upset at me because i am not working and just laughing to myself writing this post. please message me if you have any recommendations in this genre - i am all ears.

favorite holiday songs
  • this one is mine and my sister's favorite song. when we lived under the same roof and went with my mom to buy our family christmas tree, we would pump this jam up — destiny child's: doesn’t it feel like christmas. the eight days of christmas gifts are truly wild ranging from diamond belly ring to a clk mercedes.
  • love this jam. if you watched the netflix billy murray christmas special, maya rudolph kills her rendition of “christmas (please come home).”
  • you can’t go through a christmas season without listening to some *nsync - merry christmas, happy holidays.
  • ok, i have so much more to add to this, i am going to make a christmas playlist on my spotify - hol christmas.

gift wrap
  • this might fall under traditions, but i always have my gift wrap reflect some portion of my year. for example, the year i went to africa on my honeymoon i used this gorgeous wrapping paper. last year i was obsessed with my recent trip to japan, so i used some christmas washi tape i bought there with a bunch of fun stickers. this year, i am obsessed with my doggies, so you better believe the gift wrap will reflect!

obsessing over

the seventeen cookbooks i just bought. this one. this one. this one. this one. this means i'm really old, right? and no i didn't purchase them on amazon. i purchased them at books & books, our local bookstore! support local, people!

• revamping my wardrobe. i threw out 75% of my closet after i had the kids. not because things didn't fit me but because i wasn't wearing any of it and because i read something somewhere (i might have heard it on that's so retrograde) about throwing out old clothes as a way of cleaning energy. like that portion of my life is gone and this is the new "me" so i'm making way for the new me and my new wardrobe. this purge included throwing out my attorney work clothes, which was freeing. now i just need to buy the new wardrobe. i'm looking for comfy, stylish, every day, "hi i'm a creative", clothes. like madewell, sea, golden goose, topshop?

target. for my kids' clothes (cat & jack all day!) and the opal house home line. i bought this pillow this past weekend for our home office and love it.

watching

the real housewives (always) - potomac - if you're not watching this, you need to, if for anything at all to realize "living in potomac" is an actual thing. and nyc because, it's NYC and it's actually comedy hour.

nate and jeremiah by design (you guys, i just realized what i watch is terrible compared to cristie's picks. i'm laughing writing this. lolololol). my life is sad.

 wanting

a vacation. (on a beach so my children can run free without my fearing for their safety).

cristie's madewell pants. i need some summer pants. i'm really into these sea pants, too (the whole outfit actually - i LOVE the brand). but i'm also really into saving my money? the struggle is real.

listening to

• podcasts, like cristie. bitch sesh, how i built this, second life, that's so retrograde, the lively show, the life coach school, marie forleo, almost 30. and i, like she, am also a victim of podcast ads. need a great bra? check out third love. cristie has other fantastic recommendations in her april currently post.

• i'm also listening to latin radio on itunes music. it's my new favorite radio station. especially maluma and his new album. other HOL shop radio stations: hamilton, the musical, greatest showman, the musical, charting now, pure pop, sometimes we listen to cristie's dad's spotify playlist (fleetwood mac, elton john, neil diamond).

eating

check out recipe roundup no. 2. but i figured out a rhythm to our meal planning - pasta meals last the longest (obviously), and throwing in one morning prep crockpot meal is ideal. i tried cooking a lot of food on sunday for the week but i had instances where the food didn't taste the best after storing it for 2 days in the fridge. you live you learn. but i'll move on from this adult conversation to spare my younger, more vibrant audience.

obsessed with trader joe's and how much money it's saving me. we purchase: bread, fruits and veggies, cheese, butter, milk, cereal, ground turkey, organic chicken, cereal bars, wine, ice cream sandwiches!!!

new favorite coffee shop alert! cafe curuba in the gables. would totally recommend their matcha latte with soy milk and their pan de bono with guava. omg. the ultimate.

reading

you guys i'm actually getting through a book!!! the intuitive way by penny pierce. it's about connecting with your intuition so if you're into that stuff, i'd totally recommend it.

working on

some new transitions for HOL. good ones. growing! stay tuned.

a blog post on grief. i feel like this needs to happen. i lost my dog chloe two weeks ago and it's been a rough one. and i have so much to say about it. it's so taboo and people don't talk about it but it's so necessary. missing my pup like no other. but it's life, right?

cristie is currently...

cristie's current state:  living for the start of summer which, to me, is happening right now. love this part of summer where it's just starting and am building my tan and i still enjoy being outside and in the water. it's the best!

obsessing over

donald glover aka childish gambino aka my angel.... i am obsessed with him! this is all started this weekend when i was watching saturday night live and i laughed so hard i had tears (this sketch & this sketch especially). he proceeded to performed as childish gambino and i was total heart eyes emojis. then i was alerted by the internet to his new music video and i was just shook. he is totally having a moment right now AND I AM HERE FOR IT. also, i just love his dance moves and he's playing simba in the new lion king movie. it's too much!!!!

watching

okay this is a total random but i am watching the show mom on hulu. i have no cable so whatever hulu presents me i give a chance, and i am here to say whatever algorithm they have on me works because i am loving this show. it is so sweet, great little sitcom!

real housewives because i just can't give them up. i love them.

 wanting

to travel. but i think this is happening soon! i am making it happen soon.

to clean out my whole house and somehow sell stuff i don't want and make money for aforementioned travel. obviously i know there are ways to do all of this, it's just a matter of me doing it and i WANT to do, just can't commit to doing it. ugh.

listening to

• podcast all day all night! once you go talk radio, it's hard to go back... i have a whole schedule: monday - armchair expert tuesday - anna farris is unqualified thursday - bitch sesh. everyday - the daily and xm radio (howard stern + radio andy).

eating

also into trader joe's. best place ever, especially if you are a new cook like myself. they have directions and ideas on all items to inspire you and just practical items! house of lilac loves trader joe's!

• kettle corn. we just got a new kettle corn vendor and they dropped off samples and i have been tearing through that popcorn like nobodies business! it's the perfect balance of salty sweet aka my favorite type of treat ever.

reading

wait, i've read this month...proud of me!!!!

crazy rich asians - easy, fun read! fascinating take on the titular crazy rich asians. i am down to be a crazy rich asian, that is for sure!

halfway through born a crime. trevor noah (daily show) is a born storyteller. he interweaves through stories of his childhood/ his apartheid experience with both comedy and such insightful analysis - i am just digging it. important book to read but also a great book to read!

working on

 still selling my car...

 committing to cleaning and organizing!

august currently

cristie will add to this post her fabulous trip to portland, oregon. but for now, you get the pleasure of MY SUPER EXCITING currently for the month of august. brace yourselves, friends. if this summer is indicative of a slow season, i'm going into hiding this weekend because it's about to get crazy around these parts. our fall collection launches mid-september so we've been busy sourcing new product and fine tuning our new gift boxes. and yes, the holidays are around the corner but i'm holding off on thinking about 'cinnamon spice peanuts' for the time being (i can barely wrap my head around summer being over!).

some shop news to share:

our first August weekend workshop is this saturday at 11:00am! we've still got a few open seats and you can sign up via this link.

we're opening up the shop for flower + gift sales from 12:30-3pm, right after the workshop - perfect for anyone in need of weekend florals and gifts!

and we'll be at the creative cove from 3-7 at their makers market popup, right after that!

that's a whole 9 hours you can hang with us, arrange florals with us, or buy flowers or gifts from us! we hope to see you. xx

obsessing over

  • ASANA. i.e., the only way we (i) function. we separate our tasks by day and assign different projects to different team members. and once they're done, you check the box off. it's been a life saver for a company like ours that juggles so many different projects at one time.
  • our new inventory - we're sourcing a ton of new, awesome stuff for fall. including cured meats, small batch canned pickles (am i the only person that gets excited for this stuff?), to name a few.
  • this face wash. i had a few samples here at home and i honestly, can't get enough of it. it also might seem pricey but all chanel skin products last me AN ENTIRE YEAR. literally. that's not a joke. a little goes a long way so it might basically be the best money you've ever spent.
  • this face toner. THE BEST. my skin has changed for the best because of it. we sell it at the shop if anyone is ever in need!

thinking about

  • shopping - reallyyy need to find time to do this. and it is simply a lack of time to actually shop. any spare time is spent with my children and my husband and neither one of them would behave accordingly after ten minutes at the mall. i also feel like i need some type of shopping instructional after not actively shopping for 2 years of pregnancies. but i am into fashion and clothing so if i had about 5 hours of "melanie shopping time", i'd have a new wardrobe in no time. need to manifest this.
  • organizing - just bought this book and am hoping to purge unnecessary energies out of our spaces.
  • alexander's first day of preschool next monday! seriously, where does the time go?
watching

  • million dollar listing NYC (obviously)
  • beat bobby flay
  • real housewives of OC
  • real housewives of dallas (next week!!!)
  • shahs of sunset (side note - i was 5 feet from reza this weekend in the ocean on miami beach and i am BEATING MYSELF UP FOR NOT TALKING TO HIM. because we would have totally been bffs after).
  • GAME OF THRONES - i mean, what else should we live for! i'm not feeling the awkward khaleesi/john snow attraction because they're related and i'm so over the "related person hook ups" on the show. i'm also over the constant horse murdering (yes, this is actually a constant topic of conversation for me and cristie). but, i am looking forward to finding out how they're planning on convincing a dead walker to travel with them to visit cersei. seriously, what is there to watch once this show is over?!
  • ozarks - was not into this. fyi. for anyone attempting to watch this soon.

wanting

  • foyer revamp by orchard + olive
  • gallery wall add-ons by orchard + olive
  • living room revamp by orchard + olive (i constantly turn to lauren at orchard + olive because she's my good friend, is super talented, and there is nothing more exhilarating than finishing projects at home)
  • these flats (although they only have small sizes!)
  • clothes (see "thinking about" above)

listening to

  • abraham hicks radio - this is my law of attraction/spirituality jam.
  • podcasts galore!! the longest shortest time, how I built this, that's so retrograde, the lively show (sometimes).
  • itunes radio - charting now radio!

eating

  • these days, too much power pizza
  • we just made the three meat lasagna from what's gaby cooking. i mean, veal, beef, and pork. AND BECHAMEL. is there anything better?! i actually recommend cooking the meat and then sticking it through a food processor if you have one instead of buying the meat already ground.
  • baby food - not eating this (margot is) but i've been making a ton of different varieties for her every weekend. i didn't get to do this with alexander because i was pregnant by the time he started eating solids (INSERT "I CANT WRAP MY HEAD AROUND THIS" FACE EMOJI) and the texture grossed me out. my mom made most of his meals.

reading

  • currently taking a reading vacation because i'm 95 and can barely get through a bravo show without zonking out.

working on

  • spirituality - always. i tried waking up at 5am to meditate about 4 months ago and i haven't woken up later since (except on the weekends!). i'm up anywhere between 5-5:30, i read some and i meditate, and i'm prepping my babies' milk and coffee by 6:15am. we're at the flower market by 8am every day and on days when i'm out the door early, it's nice to have time to wake up and unwind (and hang with the babes).
  • living my best life. ALWAYS.
  • making shutterfly albums from the several professional photos we've invested in for the kids over the past year (this is part of june/july's "working on" and i'm ashamed it's still here -_-)

cristie is currently...

obsessing over

  • portland! i just came back from a trip to the northwest and i could of spent a whole month exploring the area. so much fun, so much greenery, nature, and fresh air!!!! not to mention the amazing food, bars and overall vibe of the city. the time to go is def the summer as the weather is truly glorious.

thinking about

  • budgeting. def need to do this sooner rather than later! i avoid these 'grown adult' situations all day but it's necessary!

watching

  • game of thrones - best television ever!!!! every episode leaves me like woah and than melanie and i debrief for a solid 30 minutes on monday. i can't get enough of jon snow! #winterishere
  • million dollar listing - because steve gold looks like jon snow.

wanting

  • to seriously purge my closet and my home. like throw away everything. once i have done this i can buy.......
  • new sunglasses. needs to happen.
  • new clothes in general but i typically can't shop in august/september due to the heat.

listening to

  • dolly parton randomly. i love her!
  • bitch sesh podcast. hilarious - i highly recommend if you are a bravo fan.

eating

  • bombay darbar - indian food is amazing.
  • starting my hello fresh this week! let's see how this goes

reading

  • i bought 'player one' at an airport and haven't touched it. let's see if we can get through a chapter before next week.

working on

  • learning to cook! hello fresh, i am looking at you.
  • budgeting - just making better choices in my monetary life.

may 2017 currently...

it's that time again friends, get excited. i'm a huge fan of these because they either make me really happy once I realize I was extremely productive in the past month or make me take a "personal" day of meditation to figure out why i wasn't productive. either way, i win.

melanie is currently...

obsessing over

  • my new sitting area, finalized and styled by Orchard + Olive. cristie and I keep raving about them so much you would think we were getting paid, but they're the best thing to hit the streets since....

  • Diced Food. if you haven't tried it, you need to. it's a healthy lunch food alternative. totally into it. and it's by our new office. and they legit deliver on a bike in 10 minutes. it's glorious.
  • our new office space that has yet to be decorated BECAUSE everything is being thought and planned out so that it's exactly what we need it to be. this is EXTREMELY unlike me because I typically furnish my office spaces in 2.5 secs but in an effort to make the space functional and effective, i'm being patient. stay tuned.
  • what's gaby cooking. i insta storied me cooking one of her recipes last night and i'm pretty sure i obsessed over this about two months ago but her blog is a main staple in our house. her recipes are easy and the best for during-the-week cooking. if you're a cook, and you're into new recipes, i totally recommend checking her out!
  • our new gift box and floral gift collection and OUR NEW DELIVERY SCHEDULE: we're delivering every. single. day. because we now have the best delivery driver! honk at andres if you see him in da streets. if you need to send thank you, sympathy, new baby, hostess, or just a simple i'm thinking of you gift, we've got you covered. and seriously guys, they're so darn cute and such a good idea. please check them out when you get a chance. we're offering 20% for all new collection first orders with code SUMMER.
  • of course, we're also delivering our bouquets of the day EVERY DAY and we're delivering our NEW small seasonal floral arrangement (pictured above) EVERY DAY. starting at $45. (seriously!)
  • and finally, ladies and gents, we have officially traversed into the small event floral design landscape. what does that mean? after much demand, we are now styling and designing florals for events of under 100 people. anything as small as a dinner (our favorites) to as medium as a 90 person wedding. we're on a mission to spread + elevate the beauty and simplicity of every day florals (and every day includes all types of celebrations!). email us for a proposal or for more information - sayhello@houseoflilac.com

thinking about

  • margot's baptism - it's officially next month and zero has been done for it except book the church. (that's really all you need, right? and some clothes? and shoes?)
  • summer vacation with the two babies at the end of this month. we're leaving to the Caribbean and I'm just. so. tired. already. i will shift the way i'm perceiving the whole situation (everything is perception right?) but i can't help but feel exhausted at all the crap I have to lug with me. i know all moms reading this understand my dread. and i don't feel guilty for feeling it. moving on.

watching

  • southern charm. (the besttttttt)
  • nate and jeremiah by design.
  • flip or flop las vegas.
  • shark tank

wanting

  • nice summer flats
  • an amber interiors throw pillow for my bed
  • a child friendly ottoman for my family room
  • to start working out and rid myself of the pregnancy kangaroo pooch (currently in my wildest dreams)

listening to

  • that's so retrograde podcast
  • how i built this podcast
  • a well designed business podcast
  • apple i tunes pop radio (j. bieber on repeat basically)
  • anything law of attraction podcast!

eating

  • clearly lots of what's gaby cooking...
  • but our weekly meal schedule is typically planned from sunday - thursday and includes some variation of the following
  • ground turkey (meatloaf, giada turkey meatballs, tacos), ground beef (cuban picadillo, bolognese, lasagna), flank steak (sometimes we'll cook cuban ropa vieja or asian mirin steak), chicken breast (chicken vaca frita, tacos, lemon chicken a la french style), chicken thighs (curry chicken), shrimp (shrimp tacos or shrimp and grits). but fear not, we are human and very often we just postmates dinner because we're just too lazy to parent AND fully function after 4pm. something's gotta give.
  • but in all seriousness, i've been skipping lunch a lot because there really aren't enough hours in the day and i need to get better at eating and taking care of myself!

 reading

working on (i'm going to get so deep here so brace yourselves)

  • meditating.
  • i'm on a spiritual journey and my faith is currently being tweaked significantly. it's been a really amazing process for me and if anyone is curious i'd be happy to share.
  • my attitude towards life and my every day. i know i mentioned this above but life is how you perceive it and people are mirrors of what you perceive - they act the way you think them to be. so i'm trying to sit back and take life easily and give people the benefit of the doubt. life has impressed me so far.

cristie is currently...

disclaimer: i wrote this on memorial day monday so my brain is operating at around 60%. my current self is in need of a some serious detox! but i am into these lists so let's do this!

obsessing over

  • gotta second melanie, i am loving my orchard + olive vignettes so much, i skip around my house! i am also obsessed with the work they did for my cousin and melanie's new and improved sitting room. they complete a room or a moment and are expert stagers. plus having something to look forward in your email is one of life's little joys!
  • Diced Food. ok i guess melanie and i spend too much time together because our list are the same. super tasty, organic food and the whole ordering, delivering, paying process is seamless.
  • my health. for some reason this month i have made all my doctor appointments and have really looked into becoming the healthiest version of myself! also making a serious effort to eat clean and lay off the processed foods. this is a new thing so i will be sure to give you an update next month!

thinking about

  • clean eating and looking forward to feeling and seeing the difference it makes! i have never ever cooked or gone to the grocery store so i am making a total change to my lifestyle.

watching

  • real housewives of new york
  • comedians in cars getting coffee (on my phone)
  • guardians of the galaxy 2 - best soundtrack and the movie made me LOL at the movies several times. i love drax the destroyer what can i say!

wanting

listening to

  • i've come to realize i am an interview type of gal. so i love katie courics podcast & listening to howard stern interviews on demand.
  • spotify all day. my favorite app!

eating

  • clean!

 reading

  • ugh, nothing. this is something i currently need to work on big time! which leads me to...

working on (going to hold myself accountable to these and give an honest report back next month!!!)

  • reading a book by the time I write my next currently
  • eating clean and getting the hang of the kitchen and home cooked meals
  • having a clean and organized home
  • purging my closet and drawers (summer cleaning is happening!)
  • appreciating all the blessings in my life every day!!!!

april 2017 currently ...

our flower cart last week at the coral gables flower market. we'll be there this friday from 11-6pm letting you pick each and every flower for your weekend bouquets! find us by grazianos and fritz & franz.

i warn you, this is a long one. but worth reading! xx

melanie is currently...

in lieu of my super interesting life points for this month (the most interesting of which is my attempt to read "big little lies" in the week between the penultimate episode and the series finale - #fail), i will share an epiphany i currently had. we're moving into a new space in the next two weeks and it's beauty and our success requires me to share this with the world. so without further ado...

it's april. like what? i'm sorry, it's may in like 10 days. so it's may.

i've been sitting with this thought for some time as to why i do what i do every day. my post-quarter-life crisis maybe. why house of lilac? why send a gift? why the idea? these are actually questions i get on the regular. and the simple response is, it's beautiful, and i love it, and it fills me, and gives me purpose, and i work for myself (which i love because no one tells me what to do #lifegoal). and if you know me you know i'm the hardest worker ever and have standards of quality that are borderline ridiculous (cristie is helping me work on this - i've gotten better, i swear). but i always keep coming back to the subconscious why of what i do. and i guess the easiest way to do this is to talk about myself and my own personal journey.

i'm super into drinking the koolaid, as i like to call it. i'm very much into the law of attraction and am destined to find my spiritual purpose in life and if you work for me or are an independent contractor for me, or are my husband (who wants to kill me on the reg. with my spiritual talk), or my family (my kids lucked out because they're too little to even understand what "no" means) you hear me talk about positivity, vibrations, energy, meditation, and other spiritual jargon, ALL DAY LONG.

i left a job as a lawyer because i was flat out miserable and over three years ago embarked on the most amazing personal journey of my life. i wouldn't say i had a plan all figured out, but i followed feelings. and i followed things that made me feel happy. and i wasn't sure where i wanted to go. but i was sure of things that made me feel happy:

1) my home (which we were lucky enough to renovate), not only what it looked like (i have an insane style and design obsession and my house is the culmination of a life full of inspiration), but also what it FELT like to me. my friends used to joke that they would walk into a new apartment right after we'd moved in and it would be fully furnished and extremely inviting in 2.5 seconds. but my homes are huge for me - it's our point of origin, where we lay our head at night, where we pray, where i love to host, where we laugh with friends and family, where I raise my children to be good people. my home gives me structure and is my main source of energy. and i feed off of every piece of art, every candle that's lit, every plate I purchase, every candle that burns, every shelf on the wall, and every photo i frame. i want to and i want people to walk into my home and instantly feel the love inside it's approx. four walls.

2) a stocked refrigerator and feeding/hosting people. we cook at least five days out of every week. my husband loves cooking and is amazing at it and i have a few signature dishes i like to think i've perfected. food (and wine) fills our souls - it's actually one of the things we share in common - we're major foodies and love good restaurants and yes, we watch the food network together (#beatbobbyflay forever). and feeding others, including our kids, is a huge source of joy for us.

3) books and photos. i LOVE books. i have about 6 on my night table right now and am always reading 2 at a time (I know i've mentioned this before). but there's something about books that fills every part of me. i almost read my entire elementary/middle school library by 5th grade and am a huge proponent of libraries. i still boycott the kindle unless i HAVE to start reading a book RIGHT NOW (which happens bc i'm super impatient). and don't even get me started on coffee table books. and yes, i read them or at least look at the pages.

4) taking care of myself and my family. i legitimately have to work on this every day. and this category is broad but one of the biggest reasons i left my day job was lack of time for personal admin. i type this on a monday that I have now designated as house of lilac personal admin day because guess what, our personal lives are as important as our jobs, if not more important. i'm a firm believer that i would not be half the business owner I am or have half the inspiration i have if i didn't take care of myself and my family. i believe in exercise (although i barely get to do a lot of it these days), healthy food, really amazing beauty products and taking care of your skin and except for a few brands I swear by (like carters pjs, baby gap, pampers, huggies wipes, zara and forever 21) really great quality items. i'm a huge believer that the passion and love behind high quality goes a long way (i see this every day with my HOL partners).

4) flowers. this is the most obvious  - the idea of having a home filled with fresh flowers was and is amazing. but fresh flowers were scary to me, UNTIL i learned more about them - where they grow, the temperatures they sustain the longest in, how to condition them and cut their stems - and started styling them for home decor.

SO. to bring this full circle, why house of lilac? i realized that my home, food, taking care of myself and my family, flowers, and books all brought me so much joy. and sharing it with others brought be three times that same joy. and then i realized - what if i took these passions and talents and created a company that shared this joy with so many others so that they can share that same joy with the people they cared about? so that they WANTED to share that joy with others. giving is so understated and understandably so - not only is it somewhat complex but when you attempt to give you see the same florals, the same fruit baskets, the same diaper towers, and, really, what does all of it mean?

so we're on a mission. through our sought after gift items, our locally handmade boxes, and our curated flower bouquets, we're on a mission to make giving mean something. on a mission to teach others that a little bit of thought goes a long way. and on a mission to bring joy to people's homes and people's lives, whether you purchase a gift or bouquet for someone else or for yourself.

every partner we work with, from our honey, cooking salt, to our candles to our kitchen towels to our vanilla marshmallows and chocolate covered pretzels to our muslin burp cloths and coffee table books, tells a story true to their own hearts - one of quality, love, detail, and so much joy. and each one of them is on their own mission to spread love. and we're on a mission to spread it with them. and maybe fill a few souls along the way.

happy monday, friends! onto more comical, less sappy information.

obsessing over

  • japan – my instagram has been taken over by cherry blossom season and it’s only reaffirmed my need to go to the ‘land of the rising son’. the plan is to go this coming october and I am determined it make it happen. if anyone has been and has any recommendations, please send them my way!
  • my skin – I recently heard ‘skin is in’ and I am all about it. I have taken a serious interest in the quality of my skin and investing in beauty products and random amazon finds. I spend too much time on the internet reading about different methods and the most effective products. this is my favorite find – really has brightened my complexion and softens my skin.
  • zara – my whole wardrobe is zara. it’s a little out of hand.
  • amazon alexa – such a fun party tool and now I listen to so much more music. I am a freak who puts on classical music for my dog when I am gone. I also live for my “alexa, whats the news today” briefing and weather.
  • my dog milo – my obsession grows daily! he is truly the center of my world right now. my friend showed me this etsy store and I really want to get milo as the astronaut for my house.
  • our spring/summer collection! - we worked really hard on it and it’s our best collection yet! we put so much thought into every celebration and reason to give our boxes and came up with so much goodness. don’t worry, you won’t have to wait too much longer to shop it for yourself! big things ahead for house of lilac, I know it!

thinking about

  • our new office space we are moving into in the near future and how it’s going to be the cutest spot ever! melanie is a true HGTV genius (her house is out of a catalog) and I know she’s going to rock it. we have a lot of ideas of ways we can make it a space for everyone to enjoy so like I said, big things ahead for house of lilac!
  • our Thursday plans of seeing our guru, Jen Sincero, at books & books. More info on that here . she’s the best and I am pretty sure this talk is going to change my life!

watching

  • not that much TV at all! actually, my household is considering ‘cutting the cable chord’ and just streaming. we really pay so much for cable and internet (thank you uverse) and end up watching netflix all day. has anyone successfully done this or am I going full millennial over here?

wanting

  • to get some pretty stationery and gift tags. wynwood letterpress I am coming for you!
  • these adorable cocktail napkins from shop lettermade I love these type of small details when entertaining!
  • everything orchard and olive tells me to buy. they are putting the finishing touches on my house and I am loving it. lauren & courtney are so talented! I can’t wait to see how everything comes together.

listening to

  • s-town – melanie got me into this and I totally devoured it. episode 2 is a gamechanger. many of nights last week were spent walking milo and listening to this. it’s from the same makers of this American life (a mainstay in my podcast world) and serial (season 1 amazing season 2… not so much).
  • howard stern – this is a mainstay in my life since first got xm radio! he is the best interviewer in the game. my favorites recently are adam sandler, scarlett johannson, and craig ferguson. you can usually find his best work on youtube. I highly recommend if you are bored at work!
  • my best friend monica’s spotify playlist –‘alexa, turn on my ‘moni spotify playlist’ is a frequent request. I am actually quite literally ‘currently listing to’ this playlist right now – meta af.

eating

  • I really have no idea what I eat on a day to day basis and it needs to end! I want to learn how to cook and meal prep so I am not constantly eating out. my goal is by next months ‘currently’ to be eating home cooked meals! now that I have written it down and put it on the blog, I am holding myself accountable.

reading

  • another thing I am going to hold myself accountable for, need to read more! I feel like I read articles from the new york times and vanity fair all day on my phone, but they are so random I can’t catalog them here. but I need to read actual books especially now that I am going to ‘cut the cable chord!’.

working on

  • aforementioned, cooking and reading more! really want to get a good routine for my days, but I think the new office is going to help that too.
  • tomorrow is tax day and I have yet to do them. so quite literally today and tomorrow and I am working on my taxes. first time filing jointly, super exciting stuff!

march 2017 currently...

it's amazing how fast the days and weeks go by - since my 2017 pep talks post, a whopping almost 2 months and 8739 pep talks have come to pass, the first quarter of this year is almost over, my newborn is out of the fourth trimester and my son is a year and a half (omg).

we're so busy around these parts - busy with goal setting, subscriptions, bouquets of the day, gift boxes, corporate gifting and events, weddings! (we'll be in nashville assembling 125 gift boxes next week - stay tuned), and we're grateful. so, so grateful (being grateful for something attracts more of that same light into your life - fyi. try it!). we've been wanting to start this series titled "currently..." where we talk a little about what we're currently thinking, doing, eating, obsessing over, you name it, we'll write a story about it. our goal is to make conversation about really cool (and only cool bc cristie, our studio manager, is cool) MIA places, experiences, books, food, podcasts, the list goes on. my life currently revolves around sleep training and to be quite honest, making it through the day alive, but as a team we've come up with some really awesome stuff to share. so here goes nothing:

  • coffee (so much of this)
  • furniture for the house
  • mcgee and co - everything. just everything.
  • madruga bakery - fresh made challah bread, pastries, avocado toast, and the best lattes on this side of us1.
  • bottega la dolce vita - italian market in miami. mind blown. they'll put together charcuterie boards for events! super into services that help a super busy sister out these days, including instacart, amazon, prime now, and glam squad.
  • my friend lauren's business, orchard + olive - she basically styles home decor, vignettes, and gallery walls aka comes into your house and makes it feel like a home in 2.5 seconds.

working on

  • this could turn out to be the most exhaustive list of all time, but from an hol standpoint: spring/summer 2017 collection, new baby collection, mother's day!!, some serious marketing/pr endeavors
  • from a personal standpoint: one of my goals this year is to love myself a little more. what does that mean? accepting that I can't do everything and that some days i won't get to finish an entire to do list. and that won't make me less successful or hard working than someone without as many responsibilities as me. so when i can't work any longer from exhaustion or get caught up in personal life, like my kids (my priorities), i remind myself that it's ok, that i'm a badass, and that it's time to go to sleep and recharge my batteries. tomorrow's always a new day and there's always a pep talk shower with my name on it.
